French President Emmanuel Macron declared that he wanted to “place the prospect of recognition of the State of Palestine in a useful dynamic”, during a telephone interview with the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas.

According to a press release published Wednesday by the Elysée, the Head of State “recalled France’s support for a reformed and strengthened Palestinian Authority, capable of exercising its responsibilities throughout the Palestinian Territories, including in the Gaza Strip, for the benefit of the Palestinians.”

He also “expressed his sincere condolences to the Palestinian people for the intolerable human toll of the operation in Gaza and after the new tragedy represented by the bombing of a displaced persons camp in Rafah”.

“Both Presidents called for Israeli military intervention in Gaza to cease immediately, as requested by the International Court of Justice. There are no safe areas in Rafah today. The President of the Republic underlined France’s determination to work with Algeria and its partners in the Security Council so that it expresses itself strongly on Rafah, as well as to continue efforts around the French draft resolution. » continues the presidency.

France also considers that it is “all the more urgent to relaunch peace efforts and put an end to the systematic postponement of the implementation of the two-State solution and the establishment of a State Palestinian”.

With a view to possible recognition of Palestine, Emmanuel Macron called on Mahmoud Abbas “to implement essential reforms” and underlined “Israel’s responsibility not to obstruct the transfer of revenue from the Palestinian Authority” .

“Finally, the leaders discussed the situation in the West Bank. The President of the Republic expressed his strong condemnation of the violence committed there against Palestinian civilians. He recalled his requests to the Israeli authorities to put an end to it. The continuation of the colonization policy fuels this violence and constitutes a serious violation of international law. He reiterated France’s determination to adopt new sanctions against violent settlers, in conjunction with its partners,” the press release concludes.

This position comes at a time when faced with the catastrophic situation in the Gaza Strip, France has been questioned for several days about the possibility of recognition of Palestine.
