A falsely humorous video shared by an Israeli minister illustrates the crisis caused by the recognition of the Palestinian state by several European countries.

INTERNATIONAL – The first consequences of the recognition of the Palestinian state by Madrid. The diplomatic quarrel between Israel and Spain took a new turn this Sunday, May 26, with a sadly ironic video relayed by the Hebrew state to fuel the anger of the government of Pedro Sanchez.

As a reaction to Spain’s decision to recognize the Palestinian state, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz shared a video on his X account that has all the makings of a political attack. This, accompanied by a message addressed to the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, shows in a very unsubtle manner a montage alternating between a video of flamenco dancers and images of armed Hamas men, notably during the attack on October 7.

Against the backdrop of Andalusian music, the video sends a clear message: “ Hamas: thank you Spain “. And in his own message on X, Israel Katz tells Pedro Sanchez that Hamas “ thanks him for his services “.

Spain remains inflexible

A provocation particularly poorly received by Madrid, which hastened to denounce the broadcast and sharing of this video on social networks, deemed “ scandalous and execrable » by the head of Spanish diplomacy José Manuel Albares.

During a press conference, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Spain also denounced the attitude of his Israeli counterpart, recalling that “ everyone knows, especially my Israeli colleague, that the Spanish government has condemned Hamas terrorism from the beginning and in all its actions », Reports the European media network Euractiv.

I have said it many times, and I repeat it here today: the people of Israel are a friendly people of the Spanish people and Israel, of course, has the right to have its own state.”, he added, as if to ease tensions after Madrid’s strong decision in connection with the State of Palestine. The minister nevertheless remained inflexible on his decision, assuring that “ no one will force us to do it (modify its positioning) “.

The sharing of this video by an Israeli minister is not, however, the first action by the Hebrew state to sanction the countries which will recognize the Palestinian state from May 28. Because in addition to Spain, Ireland and Norway also followed this path last Wednesday. A path already taken a few days earlier by Slovenia.

Preliminary punitive measures »

Proof that the crisis between Spain and Israel is acute, this Monday, May 27, the Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs ordered the Spanish consulate in Jerusalem to cease its services to the Palestinians from June 1. From this date, the Spanish consulate in Jerusalem will be “authorized to provide consular services to residents of the consular district of Jerusalem only, and (shall) not be authorized to (…) carry out consular activity with respect to residents of the Palestinian Authority”specifies the press release.

Decisions described by Israel Katz as “ preliminary punitive measures against the Spanish consulate in Jerusalem, following the recognition by the Spanish government of a Palestinian state ». “Anyone who gives a prize to Hamas and tries to establish a Palestinian terrorist state will not be in contact with the Palestinians”he added in his warning.

Very critical of the action of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanhayu, Spain asked Israel on Saturday to comply with the order of the highest UN court. With the request to immediately cease its bombings and ground attacks on the Gazan town of Rafah, still hit during the night from Sunday to Monday by deadly strikes on a refugee center, which left more than 30 dead.
