The Russians announced that they had struck a military target, an assertion contradicted by the publication by the Ukrainian authorities of video surveillance images of the store recorded a few seconds before the strike.

The day after the Russian airstrike on a supermarket in Kharkiv, the head of the investigative department of the national security service in Kharkiv released footage from a surveillance camera inside the store, seconds before the two bombs do not hit the building.

We see several civilians doing their shopping in this store of the Epitsentr hypermarket chain which sells household appliances and DIY products. A gigantic explosion abruptly blacks the screen, briefly showing pieces of sheet metal and pipe collapsing in front of the camera.

The attack left at least 16 dead, 43 injured and 16 missing. “It happened suddenly. At first we didn’t understand, everything went black and everything started to fall on our heads.told AFP Lioubov, a cleaning lady at the hypermarket. “Fortunately my phone turned on, thanks to its torch I found where I was, but in front of us everything was already burning”. A gigantic fire actually broke out in the central part of the Russian brand. According to firefighters, the flames, which were finally brought under control, ravaged 10,000 square meters.

Russians defend strike on ‘military warehouse’

“The bodies of seven other victims, sought by their relatives and colleagues, have not yet been found. They are considered missing.details the head of the investigation department, Serhii Bolvinov, in his post on X (formerly Twitter). “It is clear that people were completely unprepared for such an attack, they were at their workplace and going about their business”he continues.

Comments which undermine the version defended by the Russian state agency TASS, which cited a Russian security Source on the day of the attack to assert that a missile strike had effectively destroyed a “military warehouse and command post” in the building. The day before, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had denounced on Telegram the “brutal blow” carried by Russia on “a hypermarket under construction.”Only madmen like Putin are capable of killing and terrorizing people in such a despicable way.”he added.

“For them (the Russians), it’s a pleasure to burn. We all know who we are dealing with.”again deplored the Ukrainian head of state on Sunday, insisting that Russia is “ruled by people who want it to be the norm to burn lives, destroy cities and towns, divide people and erase national borders through war”.

Emmanuel Macron, for his part, judged the Russian strike “unacceptable”. “France shares the Ukrainians’ pain and remains fully mobilized alongside them”wrote the head of state about X, deploring the “numerous victims” after this strike, “children, women, men”, “families”.
