Madrid: demonstration against the amnesty law for Catalan separatists

Tens of thousands of people took to the streets on Sunday in central Madrid to express their opposition to the amnesty law in favor of Catalan separatists which must be approved on May 30. “Pedro, resign!”, chanted the demonstrators, demanding the departure of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez.

“I ask you to withdraw this amnesty!” launched Alberto Nuñez Feijoo, the leader of the Popular Party (right), who called this demonstration in which approximately 20,000 people participated according to the prefecture, four times more according to the organizers.

“Spain is not for sale (…), Spain is a state of law in which all citizens are equal before the law, before justice,” he added, in the presence of two former conservative Prime Ministers, José Maria Aznar and Mariano Rajoy.

After the legislative elections of July 2023, the two separatist parties in Catalonia (north-east) made an amnesty measure for their activists involved in the region’s aborted secession attempt in 2017 the price of their support for the socialist Pedro Sánchez to be returned to power, which he accepted.

Angel Santana, originally from the Basque Country, fears that this law will be extended to the ETA organization, held responsible for the deaths of more than 850 people in four decades of violence, dissolved in 2018. “The amnesty should be for all Spaniards or for no one. But it’s impossible, it would create chaos.”

The “proposal for an organic amnesty law for institutional, political and social normalization in Catalonia”, as the left-wing parties who promoted it called it, could benefit above all Carles Puigdemont. The Catalan regional president at the time took refuge in Belgium after the failure of the 2017 secession attempt and thus escaped Spanish justice.

The proposal, described by Pedro Sanchez as a “brave and necessary step towards reunification”, was approved at first reading by MPs on March 14. It must be definitively approved by the Congress of Spanish Deputies on May 30.
