Zelensky invites US and Chinese presidents to June Peace Summit

“Please support the peace summit with your leadership and participation,” the Ukrainian president said in a video message. The Peace Summit will take place in Switzerland on June 15 and 16.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Sunday invited US President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping to participate in a Peace Summit planned for Switzerland on June 15 and 16. “I appeal to world leaders… President Biden, the leader of the United States, and President Xi, the leader of China… Please support the summit peace with your leadership and participation”Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video message.

The conference is to be held in Lucerne in central Switzerland. Switzerland extended invitations to more than 160 delegations to participate, but Russia was not invited “at this stage”the government website dedicated to the event indicated in early May.

Guests include member states of the G7, G20, BRICS, many other countries from all continents as well as the EU, three international organizations (UN, OSCE and Council of Europe) and two representatives from the religious world (the Vatican and the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople). Russia, which launched the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, has made it known – in less than pleasant terms – that it is not interested in participating in this conference.

The Kremlin has repeatedly indicated that it will not participate in any negotiations if kyiv does not accept Russia’s annexation of the approximately 20% of Ukrainian territory it currently occupies. Volodymyr Zelensky clarified on Sunday that “more than 80 countries have confirmed their arrival”.
