More than fifty demonstrators in the streets of Brussels… on bicycles: they denounce the “genocide” in Gaza

The 18th edition of Via Velo Palestina started on Saturday morning, departing from the Cinquantenaire park. All day long, demonstrators will roam the streets of the capital on bicycles to denounce the Israeli policy of apartheid against the Palestinian people and the “genocide” underway in Gaza.

Between 50 and 100 people made up the procession, which set off at 10:30 a.m. to arrive around 4:00 p.m. at Place Anneessens. Organized since 2007, these two-wheeled demonstrations are part of the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) campaign which targets Israel.

The mobilization aims to denounce the state’s apartheid policy towards the Palestinians, as well as the complicity of European leaders with crimes against humanity committed by Israel.

For 17 years, the 2.3 million inhabitants of the Gaza Strip were subjected by Israel to a cruel blockade causing serious shortages of essential goods (food, drinking water, electricity, medicine, etc.). On October 7, 2023, Hamas reacted in an extremely violent manner to this unbearable situation – violence of which Israeli civilians were the victims“, lamented the citizen collective Via Velo Palestina.

The demonstrators, however, qualify the “fight back“Israeli following October 7”genocide“, and point to destruction”on a scale never seen before“from Gaza.

The dead and injured – mostly civilians including many children – number in the tens of thousands. Residents are systematically deprived of drinking water, food and medical care. No type of building is spared from the bombings: neither religious buildings, schools, hospitals or buildings of the UN agency responsible for Palestinian refugees, Unrwa“, recalled the collective.

Denying international law and UN decisions, the State of Israel has long been outlawed, in particular thanks to the political, military and economic support of the United States and many EU states, including ours.“, he concluded.
