The installation of the temporary American jetty on the coast of Gaza allowed the disembarkation in one week of 97 trucks of humanitarian aid, the UN spokesperson said on Friday, noting that the operation had stabilized after “difficult beginnings”.

The United States completed this pier last week, the construction of which was announced in March by President Joe Biden. This is to alleviate the restrictions imposed by Israel on the land delivery of aid to the Gaza Strip, ravaged by seven months of war triggered by the Hamas attack against Israel on October 7.

The population “took what they could”

Since the first unloading on May 17, the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), responsible for the operation from the unloading of cargoes arriving from Cyprus, “has taken possession of 97 trucks,” said Friday Stéphane Dujarric, door -spokesperson for UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres.

The first two days, the population themselves seized the contents of “a certain number of trucks” en route to the WFP warehouses, he added, specifying that the agency had not lost any truck.

He had explained earlier in the week that last weekend, trucks, crossing areas where “there has been no aid” and where famine threatens, had been stopped by the population who “had taken what ‘she could’, for fear of not seeing the precious goods again.

Stabilized

Now “the operation is stabilized, the WFP has found various routes to reach its warehouse in Deir al-Balah,” he assured Friday. Once it arrives at the warehouse, the aid is made available to UN agencies or NGOs for distribution.

Since the start of Israeli operations in Rafah on May 7, “the entry of aid into Gaza has been very limited,” the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs (Ocha) commented in a press release.

Between May 7 and 23, “only 906 trucks carrying humanitarian aid entered Gaza through all operational entry points, including 143 via the Kerem Shalom crossing, 62 via Erez, 604 via Erez -West and 97 from the floating pier,” Ocha said.

Ocha does not count the arrival of private sector trucks passing through Kerem Shalom, private goods which, according to the head of the UN refugee agency, the Israelis now give priority. The organization also does not count goods “deposited at the crossing point” without the security and logistical conditions necessary for them to be recovered by humanitarian organizations, the press release added.
