The roof of a two-story restaurant, located on the seafront in Palma de Mallorca, collapsed in the evening on Thursday, May 24, killing at least four people and injuring around twenty others.

Four people died and 21 others were injured this Thursday, May 23, in the collapse of a restaurant located on the very tourist island of Mallorca, in the Spanish Balearic archipelago.

Victims of several nationalities

Seven of the injured are in serious condition “very serious” and new are in good condition “severe”indicated the emergency services, specifying that all had been transferred to different hospitals in Palma, the capital of the island.

People from “several nationalities” are among the victims, emergency services said, without being able to provide further details.

The tragedy occurred at the end of the day in the tourist area of ​​Playa de Palma when “the roof of a two-story building” housing a restaurant, collapsed, explained the spokesperson for the emergency services. This area is located south of Palma.

Causes of collapse unknown

“It was horrible”declared a firefighter to the Spanish newspaper Última Horaspecifying that when he arrived on the scene, he saw people crying and screaming around the rubble.

The street was cordoned off by police to allow rescuers to work and check if any victims were still trapped under the rubble.

The causes of the collapse of this restaurant, located on Cartago Street in Playa de Palma, are currently unknown, but according to witnesses cited by local media, the roof collapsed on part of the first floor.

This area was very busy at the end of the day when the tourist season is already in full swing in the Balearic Islands, an archipelago also including the islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera.

A previous building collapse in 2009

In a message on his X account, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said “to closely follow the consequences of the terrible collapse on Palma beach”.

The socialist leader also “expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased” and offered “all necessary means and personnel” of the central State to help the regional authorities in the management of this accident.

In 2009, the collapse of a three-story building in Palma de Mallorca killed seven people, including two Germans and three Colombians.
