Following a summit in Brussels, European Union member states opened the door to a new law to “speed up” the expulsions of people in an irregular situation.

The 27 member states of the European Union are in favor of a new “urgent” law on immigration in order to “accelerate” the expulsions of irregular migrants, they announced after a summit in Brussels , this Thursday, October 17.

The European Council “invites the European Commission to submit a new legislative proposal” as an “urgent matter”, according to conclusions adopted during this summit bringing together heads of state and government.

On October 14, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen wrote to Member States to announce “a new legislative proposal (…) with clear obligations of cooperation for those returned” and the desire to ” effectively streamline the returns process.

Macron wants to be “much more effective” on return policies

At the end of the European Council, Emmanuel Macron said “so that we can be much more effective on return policies to countries of origin”. “Whether we have discussions with third countries who would agree to keep people who we do not want to accept and who the country of origin does not want, I am more skeptical,” qualified Macron.

“I am in favor of dissuading and preventing people from arriving on European soil when they follow organized clandestine movements,” declared the President of the Republic.

“I am in favor of welcoming the women and men who, as freedom fighters, are intended to have asylum in our country,” continued the tenant of the Élysée.
