The border between Poland and Belarus is a sensitive area.

Poland will invest 10 billion zlotys (2.3 billion euros) in a program to secure its eastern border, the Prime Minister said this Saturday, as the country wants to strengthen its defenses against what it considers a growing threat from Russia and Belarus.

The border between Poland and Belarus has been a sensitive area since migrants began flocking there in 2021, after Minsk, close ally of Russia, opened travel agencies in the Middle East offering a new unofficial route towards Europe – a move that the European Union has deemed aimed at triggering a crisis.

“We have decided to invest 10 billion zlotys in our security, and especially in securing our eastern border,” Prime Minister Donald Tusk said at a press conference.

“Construction of a secure border”

“We are launching a major project to build a secure border, including a system of fortifications as well as landscaping and environmental decisions that will make this border impossible for a potential enemy to cross.”

Donald Tusk did not give further details on the planned fortifications.

The previous government built a fence more than 180 km long and 5.5 meters high on the border between Poland and Belarus to protect against illegal immigration.

It is supplemented by a system of cameras and sensors. Tusk also said he would hold talks with the European Investment Bank on Monday about 500 million zlotys of funding for the satellite component of the European Sky Shield initiative.

This initiative is a joint air defense program implemented by Germany in 2022.
