The disturbances began around 5:00 a.m. Arriving flights were diverted to other airports while departing flights were postponed or canceled, according to the Munich airport website. Since around 7:00 a.m., air traffic has been able to gradually resume.

The spokesperson was not yet able to say how many activists had entered the airport area. According to a collaborator from the German press agency DPA present on site, at least two people are sitting on the tarmac. The police are present en masse.

On X (formerly Twitter), Letzte Generation broadcast images of the demonstration. “A total of six people sat in groups of two at different locations at Munich Airport,” explains the organization. She denounces the fact that air traffic plays a major role in global warming, while the government subsidizes the aviation sector “to the tune of more than 12 billion euros per year, mainly through an exemption taxes on kerosene and capital gains”.

This action comes at the start of the long Pentecost weekend, which marks the start of one or two weeks of school holidays in several German states. In Bavaria, for example, schools are closed until June 1. Munich Airport is expected to welcome around 350,000 passengers this weekend.

Letzte Generation had already blocked Munich airport in December 2022. The collective had already organized similar actions in Berlin, Hamburg and Düsseldorf, among others.
