More than 530,000 homes in the state of Sao Paulo are still without electricity this Monday, after heavy rains which hit several regions of central and southeastern Brazil.

To restore supply, reinforcements from Rio de Janeiro, Ceara and other energy distributors were mobilized, according to the energy group Enel.

In the city of Sao Paulo alone, around 354,000 homes remain without electricity. Among the most affected municipalities are Cotia with 36,900 homes without energy, Taboao da Serra (32,700) and Sao Bernardo do Campo (28,100).

According to Enel, more than 1.5 million customers who reported outages in recent days have already had their service restored.

Seven people lost their lives in the state of Sao Paulo, Brazil’s most populous, due to this violent storm. Firefighters and civil defense responded to more than 500 incidents, including falling trees and wall collapses, according to state authorities.

The Sabesp company reported that the power outage is also disrupting the water supply, impacting the operation of pumping stations. She recommends that residents of the metropolitan area consume water from their domestic tanks responsibly.

Consumer advocacy body Procon said it will notify Enel to explain delays in restoring electricity and request detailed plans to deal with future extreme weather events.
