A few weeks before the start of summer, snow plows are busy trying to clear the snow from the slopes of the Grand-Saint-Bernard pass, where in some places it still reaches 8 meters high. At almost 2400 meters above sea level, it is a real balancing act.

A few weeks before the start of summer, the snow cover on the Alpine passes is exceptional for the season, as Frédéric Moulin, sector traveler, testifies: “The snow has remained in place, we really have conditions that we do not expect. We haven’t seen more for at least six years. The work will be substantial compared to last year.

At nearly 2,400 meters above sea level, the task turns out to be very dangerous, as snow clearer Claude Lattion explains: “In certain places we really have no room for error.”

You always have to think about what could happen, but also about the wind direction and the temperature.

To ensure the safety of workers, two guides constantly observe the terrain: “We must always think about what could happen, but also about the direction of the wind and the temperature. Firn snow like here, that weighs 800 or 900 kg per cubic meter. A machine like that can easily be knocked over.”, attests mountain guide Eric Berclaz.

Snow removal will last several more weeks, with the hope of reopening the pass in mid-June.
