The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025 highlights the progress of universities around the world in higher education and research. Among the 2092 establishments evaluated, around twenty African universities appear in the world Top 1000, but where is Algeria and its university establishments?

Times Higher Education recently unveiled its “World University Rankings 2025” ranking of the best universities in the world and the 10 most renowned universities in Africa come from three countries: South Africa, Egypt and Morocco. This globally recognized ranking is based on rigorous criteria such as research, impact and teaching, with particular emphasis on research performance. Although several African institutions stand out, some nations still lag behind in these international assessments.

Algeria absent from the ranking of the best universities

As a reminder, the ranking is based on three main criteria: research, impact and teaching, with particular attention paid to research. According to Times Higher Education, “this is the only global university ranking that evaluates research-intensive universities across their core missions: teaching (learning environment), research environment (volume , income and reputation), research quality (research results), industry (knowledge transfer) and international openness (staff, students and research)”.

This year, South Africa’s University of Cape Town is the highest ranked continentally, ranking 180th in the world. It is closely followed by other South African universities, namely Stellenbosch University and the University of the Witwatersrand, which also rank in the top 500. Morocco is represented by the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P), which is also in the world Top 500, an important achievement for a university inaugurated in 2017. Egypt has three universities in the Top 1000, namely the American University in Cairo, the Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology and the Future University in Egypt. Here is the ranking of the 10 best universities in Africa:

Algerian universities do not appear in the 2025 ranking of the best world universities. The quality of teaching and results, based on indicators such as research, academic environment and international impact, did not allow these establishments to rise in this ranking. As in several other French-speaking countries, the development of higher education and scientific research in Algeria has not yet reached the international criteria required to be among the classified institutions.
