In the heart of Hamburg, the discovery of a bomb from the Second World War triggered a major intervention by firefighters during the night from Saturday to Sunday. Due to the 226 kilo aerial bomb, a perimeter of 300 meters was evacuated in a neighborhood on the outskirts of the city.
A few hours later around midnight, firefighters reported on X that “the bomb was successfully defused.”
The bomb was discovered during an inspection of a building plot at a depth of approximately six meters. The evacuation measures took several hours, in particular because a retirement home adjoined the exclusion radius.
Emergency accommodation
People who had to leave their homes were able to reach emergency accommodation in a high school, served by shuttles. Around 220 people arrived in this shelter, according to the fire department spokesperson. He could not say how many people in total were affected by the evacuations.
On the same day in Cologne, a bomb from the Second World War had already necessitated a costly evacuation operation. After the evacuation of many apartment buildings and several clinics, the American bomb discovered on Wednesday could be destroyed safely.
