Complicated landing for a small plane which left Newcastle, New South Wales (Australia), and which was due to reach Port Macquarie this Monday, May 13, 2024.

After quickly noticing a problem after takeoff, the 53-year-old pilot ultimately remained around Newcastle. He then flew several circles above the airport because the aircraft’s landing gear did not want to extend, reports The Guardian .

“He stayed here and consumed fuel” explained the local police chief. The latter, who was able to guide the pilot from a special operations room, adds: “I could hear it. He seemed very calm to me”.

A smooth landing

On board this Beechcraft B200 Super King Air, two passengers: a 60-year-old man and a 65-year-old woman. After 90 minutes of circling in the air, the pilot finally decided to land. At the same time, emergency services were set up to intervene quickly. Several fire trucks and ambulances were mobilized because the authorities feared the worst, indicates 9News .

According to the police chief, the plane finally carried out “a classic landing with the wheels in the air”. None of the occupants on board were injured and all quickly moved away from the aircraft once on the tarmac. Several witnesses came to witness this special landing. They did not fail to applaud the pilot’s prowess, as did the teams at the command post.

Possible mechanical failure

According to initial indications, it could be a mechanical failure. The Australian Transport Safety Bureau should investigate the incident, according to 9News. In the meantime, Newcastle Airport was expected to remain closed for around 24 hours while the aircraft was recovered.
