Sergei Shoigu, in office since 2012, was dismissed on Sunday evening in a surprise in-depth reshuffle, a few days after the inauguration of the Russian president for a fifth term in the Kremlin and after more than two years of conflict in Ukraine.

“Serguei Shoigu caused more than 355,000 victims [morts et blessés, NDLR] among its own soldiers and massive suffering among civilians as part of an illegal campaign in Ukraine,” Grant Shapps wrote on the social network

“Russia needs a defense minister who can reverse this disastrous legacy and end the invasion, but all it will get is another Putin puppet,” the minister added. .

Sergei Shoigu is replaced by Andreï Beloussov, an economist who has no military background.

He was one of Vladimir Putin’s main economic advisors in recent years.

This reshuffle comes at a time when the Russian army is advancing in the Ukrainian region of Kharkiv, a few days after launching a ground assault, and is increasing its pressure in the Donbass, around Chassiv Iar.
