Immigration has a positive impact on the French economy

In 2023, developed economies experienced sustained economic growth rates thanks in particular to immigration, reports the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). This phenomenon was particularly significant in the euro zone, but also in the United States and Japan, where labor shortages have been acutely felt since the Covid-19 pandemic.

The link between immigration and economic growth

In France, the contribution of labor born abroad contributed almost 0.5 points to the growth of the active populationa figure which demonstrates the importance of immigration in national economic dynamism.

The contribution of immigration to the growth of the working population in France is a recurring subject in economic analyses. Already in 2021, the Economic Analysis Council, attached to Matignon, highlighted that skilled immigration was beneficial for the country’s economy.

The impact on the French labor market

This view is supported by OECD data, which shows a trend towards an increasing impact of immigration on the labor market for a decade. This phenomenon has helped to address skills shortages in certain key sectors, thereby supporting economic growth even in a difficult post-pandemic context.

The OECD also anticipates an improvement in global growth, while highlighting the notable divergences between the different major economic regions. If the United States shows robust growth, the euro zone, including France, seems to remain behind with forecasts for modest growth.

For France, the OECD slightly raised its growth forecast to 0.7% compared to 0.6% previously, signaling a timid but encouraging improvement. Nevertheless, the country must continue to manage the challenges associated with the integration of immigrant workers, while maximizing the economic benefits of this dynamic and often skilled population.
