Israel-Hamas War: Official Says Israel “Reviews” Ceasefire Proposal Accepted by Hamas

LHamas said on Monday that it had informed Egypt and Qatar that it accepted their proposal for a ceasefire with Israel in the Gaza Strip devastated by seven months of war.

“Ismail Haniyeh, head of the Hamas political bureau, spoke by telephone with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdelrahmane Al Thani and Egyptian Intelligence Minister Abbas Kamel and informed them that Hamas had approved their proposal for “ceasefire agreement,” according to a statement published on the Palestinian movement’s website.

A senior Israeli official told AFP on Monday that Israel was examining the proposal for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, submitted by Egypt and Qatar.

“We have received the proposal and we are reviewing it. This is not the framework we agreed upon. We are examining it,” said the senior official, who requested anonymity. He did not give details of the contents of the document.

The truce proposal in the Gaza Strip accepted by Hamas includes three phases with the objective of a lasting ceasefire, a senior official of the Palestinian Islamist movement told Al-Jazeera on Monday.

It comprises three phases, each lasting 42 days, and includes a complete Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, the return of the displaced and an exchange of hostages still held in Gaza and Palestinian prisoners held by Israel, in the goal of a “permanent ceasefire”, declared Khalil al-Hayya to the Qatari channel.
