In Italy, Giorgia Meloni’s conservative national party would finish first in the next European elections, according to our Ipsos-Euronews poll. The head of the European government dreams of tipping the table in Europe but the fight is not won in advance.

As in France with the National Rally, it is Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s far-right party, Fratelli d’Italia (Brothers of Italy), which is leading voting intentions in Italy for the European elections in next June, according to the Euronews super-poll at the end of April, while the second political force is the center-left Democratic Party, followed by the 5 Star Movement.

Fratelli d’Italia is firmly positioned at 26.7%, like at the end of March. However, according to the overall poll results, the center and the populist left are doing quite well: the Partito Democratico and the 5 Star Movement are both slightly growing compared to the previous month.

The League and Forza Italia are struggling slightly to exceed 8% of voting intentions. These two parties constitute the other components of the Italian conservative and nationalist bloc currently in power. Matteo Salvini’s right-wing populist League is a faction of the far-right Identity and Democracy group in the European Parliament and the center-right Forza Italia is a faction of the European People’s Party group, led by the foreign minister and former president of the European Parliament Antonio Tajani.

Giorgia Meloni announced on Sunday April 28 that she will be head of her party’s list for the elections. Its strategy requires high voter turnout across the continent to secure as many seats as possible in the European Parliament and influence the formation of future coalitions.

The Italian Prime Minister’s political group is a component of the European Conservatives and Reformers (ECR) group, whose objective is to hold the key to the future grand center-right coalition, between the European People’s Party and the ECR group. , as the outgoing President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen does not exclude.

But this ambition must now come to fruition in the polls on June 9. However, the seat projections, at this stage, indicate on the contrary that the EPP/Social Democrats/Renew coalition should retain the numerical advantage.

But before playing the European match Giorgia Meloni will have to face two challenges in his own country. The main one being his rival Matteo Salvini, Marine Le Pen’s strong partner in the European Parliament.

The second challenge is the rise of left-wing parties. If the Democratic Party, a member of the Socialists and Democrats group, finds an agreement with its rivals in the 5 Star Movement, led by former Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte, the left and center-left could create a coherent framework in a fragmented and conflicting Italian political spectrum.
