A police officer managed to pull a drowning autistic child out of the water in a residential swimming pool in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The child’s family called authorities after their three-year-old boy had left their home and was allegedly seen by neighbors further down their street, CNN reports.

When the police arrived, the parents told them that their son, who suffers from an autism disorder, liked to swim.

A peace officer who was searching nearby then rushed into the yard of a neighboring residence when he heard crying.

His attention went to the pool where the child was, who he was able to pull out of the water before he drowned.

Video from the officer’s body camera, obtained by CNN, shows Officer Evan Myers rushing toward the pool to rescue the child, who escaped unharmed.

The latter would have accessed the swimming pool through a small hole in the fence.

The parents say they are very grateful to Mr. Myers for his quick thinking.

“I personally want to thank him for finding my son,” says the mother, Savannah Ybarra.

The family plans to reinforce their fences to prevent such an incident from happening again.
