US Senators Express Concern Before ICC About Possible Issuance Of Arrest Warrants Against Israeli Leaders

A bipartisan group of US senators held a virtual meeting on Wednesday with senior officials of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to express concern over the possible issuance of arrest warrants against Israeli leaders, reported Axios Thursday, citing three sources who participated in the meeting. The identities of the senators and ICC representatives were not revealed, with sources saying it was a confidential meeting. One of the sources said it was an opportunity for senators to express concerns about how the ICC investigation into the Gaza war is being conducted.

Over the past two weeks, Israeli officials have become increasingly concerned that the ICC is preparing to issue arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Israeli army chief of staff Herzi Halevi.

Israel told the United States that it had information suggesting that Palestinian Authority (PA) officials were pressuring the ICC prosecutor to issue arrest warrants for Israeli leaders, according to Axios. Before that, Axios reported on Wednesday that the Israeli government had warned the Biden administration that if the ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli leaders, it would take retaliatory measures against the PA that could lead to its collapse.

US senators, members of Congress would work to prevent issuance of arrest warrants against Israelis, says Axios, and would plan to take action against the ICC if that happened. In a telephone conversation on Sunday, Netanyahu asked Biden for help on the issue of potential arrest warrants.
