UKRAINE – Emmanuel Macron once again assumes the possibility of sending Western troops on the ground in Ukraine – and specifies the nature of his thoughts on the subject. “If the Russians were to break through the front lines, if there was a Ukrainian request – which is not the case today – we should legitimately ask ourselves the question”he declares in an interview published Thursday May 2 by the British magazine The Economist.

“To rule it out a priori is to fail to learn the lessons of the last two years”, adds the French president in this article. Comments which follow the controversy created at the end of February by the French head of state, who affirmed that the sending of Western troops to Ukrainian soil should not ” be excluded “ in the future. This while NATO countries had initially ruled out sending tanks and planes to Ukraine before finally changing their minds.

Emmanuel Macron had explained that he wanted to put back “strategic ambiguity” in the European response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, in the name of a ” startle “ that he calls for. Most European countries, as well as the United States, however, clearly distanced themselves from his remarks, even if some have since taken a step in his direction.

Russia cannot win

“As I said, I exclude nothing, because we are faced with someone who excludes nothing”he reaffirmed in The Economist in reference to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The French president had made similar remarks in his speech for Europe at the Sorbonne a week earlier. “We are facing an uninhibited power. Who attacked a European country. But who is no longer in a special operation and who no longer wants to tell us what his limit is. Why should we say every morning what all our limits are, strategically? »he recalled.

“We were undoubtedly too hesitant in formulating the limits of our action to someone who no longer has them and who is the aggressor”now declares the French president facing The Economist according to the article, entitled “How To Save Europe”, a few weeks with the European elections on June 9.

“I have a clear strategic objective: Russia cannot win in Ukraine. If Russia wins in Ukraine, we will no longer have security in Europe. Who can claim that Russia will stop there? What security for other neighboring countries, Moldova, Romania, Poland, Lithuania and many others? And behind that, what credibility for the Europeans who would have spent billions, who would have said that it was the survival of the continent that was at stake and who would not have given themselves the means to stop Russia? So yes, we must not exclude anything”insists the head of state.

Comments published as the United States has just accused Russia of having used chemical weapons in Ukraine, since the start of the war launched by Russian troops in early 2022.
