The free yellow bus slaloms between the glass towers of Manchester centre. The largest measures 201 meters, making it the tallest structure built outside of London. He stops at the foot of a futuristic skytrain. A swipe of a bank card at a terminal and you take it to Media City, a new district on the former site of the docks which houses the BBC, a university, a museum and a performance hall that looks like a flying saucer. Further north, the gigantic stadium of Manchester City, a team bought by the Arab Emirates, bears witness to the financial flows that flow into the former industrial city.

This renaissance owes a lot to one man: Mayor Andy Burnham. Elected for the first time in 2017, this son of a telephone engineer and a receptionist, who joined the Labor Party at 14 in the wake of miners’ strikes, is seeking a third term in the local elections on May 2. The British will go to the polls to elect more than 2,600 municipal councilors and 11 mayors, including three for the first time. A new function in the United Kingdom: introduced in London in 2000, it spread to England from 2017.
