The hurricane season promises to be particularly active, and it could affect French islands such as Saint-Martin, Martinique or Guadeloupe. Update with journalist Sophie Lanson, present on the set of 20 Heures, Monday April 29.

In the Antilles, the hurricane season promises to be particularly violent. “This season promises to be very active, even exceptional. Some American experts are forecasting up to 23 storms this year, which is almost twice as many as usual, including five hurricanes of force majeure”indicates journalist Sophie Lanson, present on the set of 20 Heures, Monday April 29. “This danger could affect the French islands, such as Saint-Martin or even Martinique, Guadeloupe”she adds.

How to explain this very active season? “We are in the presence of an explosive cocktail”, explains Sophie Lanson. On the one hand, the Atlantic Ocean is very warm because of global warming. The water surface temperature is 21°C. “It’s the best possible fuel for a cyclone”, explains Sophie Lanson. On the other hand, there is the La Niña climatic phenomenon. In the Atlantic Ocean, with its strong winds, La Niña can favor the creation of more numerous and more intense cyclones.
