The UN Security Council expressed concern on Saturday about rising tensions in Sudan’s North Darfur, calling on parties to the conflict to de-escalate the situation.
In a press statement, the UN executive body expressed its “deep concern at an imminent offensive by the Rapid Support Forces” against the town of El Fasher, “which shelters hundreds of thousands of people who have fled violence elsewhere.”
The Council called on the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces “to stop the build-up of military forces and take measures to de-escalate the situation and respect their obligations under international humanitarian law”.
He also renewed his call for an immediate cessation of hostilities, leading to a lasting ceasefire.
For his part, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres indicated that this escalation of tensions is occurring in a region already on the verge of famine, reiterating his call on all parties to refrain from any combat in this part. from the country.
He noted, in a press release, that the El Fasher region is a United Nations humanitarian platform “which ensures that vital aid is distributed in the five states of Darfur according to needs”.
