Mexico: 11 bodies found in US border town

The bodies of eleven people, including two decapitated, were discovered Friday in the Mexican town of Ojinaga, on the border with the United States and on the drug trafficking route from the state of Chihuahua, authorities announced.

The area where the bodies were found is the scene of a conflict between criminal groups for control of this region bordering Texas, State Attorney Cesar Jauregui told reporters.

“In the vicinity of Ojinaga, we were informed of the discovery of 11 bodies, two of them decapitated,” said Cesar Jauregui, adding that a message, probably from a criminal group, had been found near the bodies.

The prosecutor, however, ruled out any connection with the internal conflicts within the Sinaloa cartel, which have been shaking the state of the same name for almost two weeks and have left more than 40 dead.

Ojinaga, located about 400 km from Ciudad Juarez, the largest city in the state of Chihuahua, has a population of 22,000. It is located on the banks of the Rio Bravo, the natural border with the United States, and faces the American city of Presidio.

The spiral of violence linked to organized crime has left more than 450,000 dead and some 100,000 missing in Mexico since 2006, according to official figures.
