(Ecofin Agency) – Cybersecurity is a challenge for African countries. In the report “Global Cybersecurity Index 2024” by Kearney, 31 countries out of 54 obtained a score of at least 55 out of 100 on the cybersecurity index.

AfricaCERT, a non-profit organization operating in cybersecurity in Africa, and CTM360, a Bahraini cybersecurity platform, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday, September 17. The aim is to enable AfricaCERT and its members to conduct in-depth external cybersecurity assessments across the region.

Jean-Robert Hountomey (photo, left), co-founder of AfricaCERT, said: “Together, we welcome the opportunity to support our community with solutions that reinforce our commitment to a more resilient African cyberspace that remains an engine of economic growth. We aim to provide defenders with tools and frameworks to improve their cybersecurity posture while equipping business leaders and decision makers with resources they can leverage to help organizations administer security controls and make risk-based decisions.”

Having a secure cyberspace is increasingly essential for African countries. According to the report “Cybersecurity in Africa-Call to action” published in June 2023 by the Kearney consultancy, Africa’s cyber resilience is weak, particularly in terms of strategy, governance and operational entities, as well as inter-sectoral cooperation. In the era of digital transformation, this exposes African countries to cyberattacks.

In July 2023, Kenya suffered a denial-of-service cyberattack by the hacktivist group Anonymous Sudan. However, the country is among the best performers in cybersecurity. According to the International Telecommunication Union’s “Global Cybersecurity Index 2024” report, the country scored between 95 and 100, establishing itself as one of the best performers globally.

This new partnership will enhance the ability of African security teams to effectively monitor, respond to and mitigate cyber threats in their critical national infrastructures. As a reminder, AfricaCERT helps countries establish and operate Computer Security Incident Response Teams (CSIRTs).
