Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, promised on Monday, September 16, during his first press conference since his election in July, to work to ensure that the morality police responsible for enforcing the compulsory hijab wearing do not “disturbs” plus women.
The announcement was applauded by moderate media, especially as it came on the day of the two-year anniversary of the death of Mahsa Amini – who had sparked an unprecedented movement in 2022 called “Woman, Life, Freedom”. But her remarks irritated the conservative camp.
During the press conference, during which Masoud Pezeshkian addressed several themes as well as the guidelines of his mandate, a journalist intervened to say that she had arrived late to the conference because of detours she had had to make on her way to avoid being arrested by the morality police.
