Against all odds, Arthur Canet and the team reached the semi-final of the European Club Cup at home

At Parc de la Rauze, the continental event organized by Beach was a real success where the local team placed fourth.

After four days of competition, the Montpellier Beach Volleyball men’s team finished in a frustrating fourth place in the European Club Cup. Like last year in Türkiye. But this time, the circumstances were different.

On the other hand, the Montpellier club, whose model is taken as an example throughout Europe, organized the event on the sandy grounds of the Parc de la Rauze, benefiting from the encouragement of the local public. On the front side, several of his players were not in the best position before starting.

Less than a week before the start of the event, Arthur Canet (19 years old) learned through the French Volleyball Federation (FFVB) that he had been let go by his teammate Téo Rotar, that he was losing his place at Pôle and that his sporting future at the highest level in the world was dimming. At the same time, Quincy Aye (29 years old) was also excluded from the federal fold.

In this context, pushing the future Azerbaijani winners to their limits during an epic semi-final lost, in the rain, in the golden set was almost heroic (2-1). The next day, this Sunday, the march was a little too high in the small final against an experienced Austrian club (2-0).

“A superb state of mind”

“This result was obtained with a team from Montpellier training, rejoices Stéphane Canet, MBV coach. Fourth is not the best place but there was a superb state of mind, the players were happy to share that. We had to face external hazards. Théo Marty and Noah Burlas had an extraordinary experience. Quincy and Calvin Aye shared their last adventure together, it’s memorable. Arthur lived up to the appointment, he doesn’t deserve what’s happening to him. I hope that this competition will change the mentality of beach volleyball in France and that it will make clubs want to develop.”

In shock before starting the matches on Thursday, Arthur Canet redid the cherry in his garden: “At the start, I was disgusted by fourth place, that of the clown of the competition. Looking back, the teams in front of us are really strong. We gave everything until the end. There was no negative vibe on the field. We couldn’t control everything like the preparation… I remember the positive moments and the support of our loved ones.”
