“High Potential”, the American version of “HPI”, is much blander than the series with Audrey Fleurot

TV SERIES – Imitated but not yet equaled. The series HPI with Audrey Fleurot experienced huge audience ratings on TF1, ranging from around ten million viewers on average for its first season to 8.3 million on average during season 4. It was therefore logically exported to the ‘international. But the United States preferred to produce their adaptation. And they really didn’t have to.

High Potentialthe name of the American remake of HPIhas been online on Disney+ since Thursday, January 23. The series takes up the original story of Morgane Alvaro (who became Morgan Guillory), a mother with a very high intelligence quotient who becomes a consultant for the police despite her little problem with authority. If the basic pitch remains solid, the rest is much less so.

The main flaw is probably the lack of pep in the series, especially with the character of Morgan played by Kaitlin Olson (Philadelphia). Audrey Fleurot plays a very colorful investigator, both in her deductions and in her outfits. But in High Potential, everything looks duller. For example, Kailtlin Olson wears outfits quite similar to those in the French version but she lacks that little extra thing which conveys Morgan’s inconstant and sunny aspect. As if the American production had smoothed out the original work.

Result : High Potential is therefore a fairly classic American detective series in which a consultant comes to lend a hand to the police. The humor has been toned down to leave more room for investigations, and in the first degree. The character of Gilles (now Oz) thus loses all his comic potential to become a simple investigator of the brigade. But at least he retains his kindness.

An adaptation that is missing “audacity”

Last October, on the set of C to youthe original interpreter of Morgane Alvaro said that she too was not convinced by this adaptation from across the Atlantic. “She’s a little more politically correct. They have erased a lot of madness and audacity.”regretted Audrey Fleurot.

A lack of madness which does not seem to have shocked American viewers. The series did very well in the United States and ABC even boasts that “the pilot episode has attracted nearly 30 million people across all platforms since its release”. The scores are so good that a season 2 has been ordered by ABC.

Alongside Kaitlin Olson, we find Daniel Sunjata (Grey’s Anatomy) in the role of Adam Karadec, who does not change his name. In the Los Angeles police station, Judy Reyes (Scrubs) plays brigade captain Selena, computer research specialist Daphne is played by Javicia Leslie (Batwoman) and Oz, Karadec’s teammate, is played by Deniz Akdeniz (Once Upon a Time).

As for the French version, filming for the fifth and final season has started but no release date has yet been announced. While waiting for it, fans of HPI can catch up on the series since all four seasons are available on Disney+ and TF1+.
