Today marks the inauguration of Donald Trump as the 47th President of the United States. He will take the oath of office, meet Joe Biden, and deliver the inaugural speech at the Capitol, as is American political tradition. The opportunity for him to give the broad outlines of his mandate. A mandate that should start with a bang. “I will act with unprecedented speed and force,” Donald Trump said yesterday. “A deluge of decrees” is expected for this first day. Immigration is the first issue on which the Republican wants to act quickly. “As soon as I take the oath of office, I will launch the largest deportation program in American history,” he assured during his campaign. Another expected measure: pardons for those convicted of storming the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
On the economic front, Donald Trump should restart his protectionist policy. He also promised to tackle the climate policies of his Democratic predecessor. His slogan “Drill, baby, drill!”, promoting the extraction of fossil fuels, was repeated over and over again during his campaign rallies.
Christine Ockrent is a journalist, producer of the show “Foreign Affairs” on France Culture and our guest. She will return with us to the victory of Donald Trump, back at the White House. Is he in a logic of “revenge”, compared to his defeat in 2020? What will be its first decisions, and what consequences on global geopolitics, and in particular on Europe? What about the famous American security guarantee on which many countries in Europe depend?
