“We are very happy”, administrative justice gives him another chance

A wild boar accustomed to humans

Élodie Cappé, at the head of a private stable near Chaource, south of , took in and adopted this female boar who had taken refuge on her property. Rillette is now a 100 kg adult accustomed to humans. But Elodie Cappé’s attempts to regularize the situation of the sow with the prefectural services with a view to legally keeping the animal have all failed so far. Her third request was rejected at the end of November, which she contested before the administrative court of Châlons-en-Champagne.

The prefecture argued that only animals coming from a farm of known origin can claim authorization to be kept by an individual. But in his order, the judge in Châlons considered that the regime applicable to the detention of non-domestic animals does not require “at any time that they be born and raised in captivity”.

And even if the capture of live wild boars in the wild is in principle prohibited, the prefect always has the possibility of authorizing it, noted the judge. This is why he ordered the prefect of Aube to re-examine Ms. Cappé’s request within one month.

In her enclosure, she has all the comforts

“We are very happy” reacted Elodie Cappé, hoping that the prefecture will “finally grant me the right to keep Rillette”. For her lawyer Karl Burger, Elodie Cappé meets all the conditions on the rules for keeping animals of non-domestic species: “Rillette is vaccinated and sterilized. She lives in a secure enclosure from third parties and wild animals. In her enclosure, she has all the comfort.”

The sow benefits in her domain from a large enclosure designed for her, with electric fences, explained Elodie Cappé in December, ensuring that she goes beyond the standards required to accommodate a breeding wild boar.
