LIVE – General policy speech: “Perhaps a few hours away from an agreement” on pensions, says Olivier Faure

The Prime Minister delivers his highly anticipated general policy speech to the National Assembly this Tuesday, January 14.

After days of negotiations with political forces, he must find a delicate balance to obtain the goodwill of the left without angering the right, particularly on the thorny issue of pension reform.

DISCUSSIONS WITH THE LEFT, “A CHANGE”?

“We can acknowledge the government of François Bayrou for having conducted in-depth discussions with the left. This is a change with the strategy of Michel Barnier” points out Aurélien Rousseau, deputy for Place Publique des on Sud Radio. Concerning the pension reform, “I see today to what extent the conditions of approval (of this measure) have left a bleed (…) We must give control back to the social partners”.

TOWARDS A “POSSIBLE AGREEMENT”?

The PS made a compromise “proposal” during the night to François Bayrou, Olivier Faure said on BFMTV on Tuesday, refusing to reveal its content. “Between 2 p.m. yesterday and midnight last night, things have progressed a lot. We are perhaps a few hours away from a possible agreement,” adds the MP, who indicates that “nothing has yet been concluded.”

The head of the Socialist Party recalls being “in the opposition” but “looking for compromises to allow the French to obtain concessions which would not see the light of day without us”.

ROUSSEL WANTS “CONCRETE”

“We are pushing for concrete progress as much as possible for our fellow citizens. We will see what the Prime Minister will announce. I want to remain optimistic. If we discussed until yesterday evening, it is because we want to obtain progress and if the government discussed until yesterday evening, it is because it wants to obtain an agreement”, estimates the national secretary of the Communist Party, Fabien Roussel. The elected official “wants something concrete” from the executive, in particular “movement on salaries and pension reform”. “We will not be satisfied with a suspension (of the pension reform) suspended from a social conference in six months,” he insists on LCI

“NO TAX INCREASE FOR THE MIDDLE AND POPULAR CLASSES”

“I hope that there will not be a measure that imposes censorship, that is to say tax increases on the middle and working classes,” says RN deputy Jean-Philippe Tanguy. The elected official specifies on Public Senate that “the absence of pension reform is not an object of censorship”. “We can repeal the reform in Parliament without the government,” he still assures.

A MOTION OF CENSORSHIP NOT ADOPTED?

The Prime Minister delivers his general policy speech this Tuesday to the National Assembly. La insoumise will immediately file a motion of censure. The RN has not indicated that it would vote for censure in mid-January, even though the votes of this political group are essential for it to be adopted.

“3 YEARS OF MELENCHON”

“I have an obsession: to protect the French and not make them endure 3 additional years of macronism. Personally, I prefer 3 years with Mélenchon,” says Emmanuel Bompard (LFI) on RTL.

THE PS IS MOVING AWAY FROM THE NFP

“Normally, Olivier Faure is supposed to be a deputy of the New Popular Front. But I have observed in recent days that, from denial to denial, he is moving away from the program of the New Popular Front,” criticizes Manuel Bompard, LFI deputy, on RTL . “Can we be so naive as to believe that François Bayrou is going to present a budget whose orientations are different from those of Mr. Barnier? There is a totally astonishing form of naivety,” he slips again.

07:57

“LET’S NOT TAKE PEOPLE FOR IMBECILES”

“Let's not take people for fools, François Bayrou was installed as Prime Minister to guarantee the continuity of the Macronist policy in Franc while Emmanuel Macron lost the European and legislative elections. This is the same budget as Mr Barnier but worse”, denounces Manuel Bompard (LFI) on RTL. “This policy deserves censorship, starting this week,” judges the MP.

BUDGET BARNIER A PIRE

“The Bayrou budget will be the Barnier budget but worse,” protests Eric Coquerel on Bonjour! TF1 Morning. “There was nothing to hope for an NFP deputy (…) On the pensions side, they do not want to fundamentally question this reform (…) There will be no repeal nor even suspension”, insists the LFI president of the Finance Commission of the National Assembly.

07:48

“THE GOVERNMENT WILL FALL”

“If the government does not fall on January 16 (the day on which a possible motion of censure filed this Monday will be voted on, editor's note), it will fall at the end of January,” assures Eric Coquerel on Bonjour! TF1 Morning.

TOWARDS A MOTION OF CENSORSHIP?

“If he does not ask for a vote of confidence. We will table a motion of censure. I can already announce to you that, (if necessary), there will be Rebels, Environmentalists and Communists. We are open to fact that the Socialists, if they have come to their senses, also sign it”, affirms Eric Coquerel in Bonjour! TF1 Morning. “We are not isolated at all,” assures the LFI president of the Finance Commission of the National Assembly, who says he “hopes” that the PS votes for censure. “I would like the NFP to come together on a motion of censure,” he concludes.

THE TIME OF TRUTH FOR FRANÇOIS BAYROU

François Bayrou is due to deliver his general policy speech this Tuesday from 3 p.m., before the National Assembly. An exercise which promises to be perilous while the risk of censorship still hovers around a Prime Minister who is struggling to find a majority in the chamber. One of the main points of uncertainty is the positioning of the mayor of with regard to pension reform.

WELCOME

Hello everyone. Welcome to this live to follow the political news of the day, and in particular the general policy speech by François Bayrou.

Left and right, his words will be closely scrutinized. François Bayrou will experience his first trial by fire this Tuesday, January 14, by delivering his general policy speech to the National Assembly. The objective, for the Prime Minister, is to escape a motion of censure. Negotiations continued on Monday with political forces to try to prevent his government from experiencing the same fate as that of Michel Barnier.

The executive is seeking in particular to prevent the Socialist Party from voting on the motion of censure which will most likely be tabled by France Insoumise following the Prime Minister's speech. But there was no “significant progress” in the negotiations for a non-censorship agreement, declared Monday evening secretary general of the PS Pierre Jouvet, deploring not having obtained “no guarantee regarding the suspension of pension reform”.

This is because the crest line is particularly narrow for the new Prime Minister. If he seeks to garner the goodwill of the left to escape the influence of the RN which led to the fall of his predecessor, too significant concessions, in particular on a possible suspension of the pension reform could cause him to lose support in the “common base” of the Macronists and LR.

If the government should not fall, due to lack of support from the National Rally for the LFI text, Mr. Bayrou's inability to rally the PS would cast doubt on the sustainability of this government which could, like its predecessor, come up against the wall of vote on the budget currently being negotiated.
