The worshipers of Little House on the Prairie are aware that the famous series from the 70s and 80s is inspired by the novels of the real Laura Ingalls Wilderand therefore taken from real facts. Thus, most of the protagonists featured in the series really existed, starting with the Ingalls family. But what about Laura’s in-laws?
The Ingalls and Wilders of Little House on the Prairie actually existed…
When the heroine of the series meets Almanzo Wilder When she arrives in Walnut Grove in season 6, she immediately falls under his spell. And, despite the age difference between them, they become closer and go out together. Laura and Almanzo marry and have a daughter, Rose. They also have a son but he dies shortly after his birth. Then, in season 9, they adopt a certain Jenny Wilder…
Performed by a very young Shannen DohertyJenny is Almanzo’s niece. She comes to live with him and Laura after the death of her father, Royal Wilder, who was Almanzo’s brother. If the latter did indeed exist, what about Jenny?
…but not Jenny Wilder, Almanzo’s niece
Unlike many characters in Little House on the Prairie, Jenny Wilder didn’t really exist. In fact, this is a character created from scratch for the series.
The real Royal Wilder married a certain Electa Hutchinsonwho already had four children of his own. Together they had a daughter, Angeline Bernice Wilderand two other girls, one of whom died at birth and the other died five months after coming into the world.
Royal, for his part, is died at the age of 78 and therefore lived much longer than his character in Little House on the Prairie.
