This MAPPA hit returns in 2025 after five years of absence
In 2023, the MAPPA studio shone throughout the year with an impressive number of animated series: from season 2 of Vinland Saga in season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisenpassing through Hell’s Paradise and the conclusion of Attack on Titanthe studio founded by Masao Maruyama had caused a lot of ink to flow. In 2024, the Japanese company has become more discreet, offering only three anime: Bucchigiri?!, Oblivion Battery and the remake of Ranma 1/2. This last series was also one of the very nice surprises of the end of 2024 alongside DanDaDan. The anime inspired by the cult manga by Rumiko Takahashi has also been renewed for a second season, still produced by MAPPA.
For 2025, MAPPA has a fairly exceptional program in store for us. While fans of Japanese animation are discovering the friendly series Zenshulaunched on Sunday January 5, the studio will be released this year Lazarusthe latest work by Shin’ichiro Watanabe, to whom we owe, among other things, Samurai Champloo et Cowboy Bebop. This animated series, co-produced alongside Sola Digital Arts and distributed by Adult Swim, is among our biggest expectations of the year!
This Sunday, January 12, MAPPA announced news that we had been waiting for for a very long time: season 2 of Dorohedoro will indeed be released in 2025. As a reminder, this is the adaptation of the eponymous seinen by Q Hayashida, the publication of which ended in September 2018. Mixing dark fantasy, horror and absurd humor, this completely crazy series tells the story of Caïman, a character with a reptile head and amnesiac, who hunts down alongside his best friend Nikaido the mages who stole his identity. The first season of the series, produced by MAPPA and entirely available on Netflix, was one of the big events of 2020.
Like the first season, season 2 is entirely directed by Yuichiro Hayashi, which should therefore ensure artistic continuity within the series. This announcement was made on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of the launch of Dorohedoro on the Japanese channel Tokyo MX. We remind you that other anime are planned this year. We are thinking in particular of the great return of Chainsaw Manwith the film Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc which will adapt one of the most popular fan arcs of Tatsuki Fujimoto’s manga, as well as season 2 of the isekai Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skill.
