In Crime at the rootwe look at scientific techniques for solving investigations

In four episodes, Crime at the root allows us to discover an often overlooked part of investigative work: scientific evidence. To reopen the cold case and finally find the person responsible for the murders, investigators rely on DNA. Since 2019, Sweden has allowed family DNA matches to resolve investigations, including through commercial genealogy sites. This kinship DNA makes it possible to solve forgotten cases all over the world. In Sweden, the history of Linköping is particularly emblematic.

Crime at the root is inspired by a real Swedish cold case

The story unfolded by Crime at the root is inspired by a real police and judicial case that shook the country. In October 2004, Anna-Lena Svensson was stabbed to death in Linköping. Mohammed Ammouri, an 8-year-old boy, suffered the same fate. When in 2019, the search for parental DNA was authorized by law, the police did not waste a minute. The genetic traces of the killer left on the knife and on a bloody cap, which until then did not correspond to anything in the police databases, were thus able to be linked to those of a member of the killer’s family. The culprit is Daniel Nyqvist. He was arrested in June 2020 and declared not responsible due to psychiatric disorders. He is now interned.
