Dexter: Original Sin – the first opinions on the series dedicated to the killer's youth are here

The first opinions from the American press on the pilot of the series Dexter : Original Sin are there, and it's scary.

The cult series Dexterwhose hero played by Michael C. Hall is a disciplined (and somewhat neurotic) psychopath who only kills bad guysended in 2013. However, it continues to make small ones since in 2021, its sequel Dexter : New Blood saw the light of day, and it is now the turn of the prequel Dexter : Original Sin to arrive on the screens.

The story of this new series focuses on Dexter's youthwhile he was still a student, and on his relationship with his adoptive father who helped him to to germinate this seed of psychopath in him (as was already widely mentioned in the original series). In the cast, Michael C. Hall only returns in voice-over, while on screen Patrick Gibson, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Christian Slater and Patrick Dempsey will appear.

While waiting to discover the series on French screens (for which no release date has yet been announced), here is the opinions of the American press on the first episode of this bloody prequel.

What could go wrong?

Dexter and the cold shower

“The good thing is that even if Original Sin is not really revolutionary, we find enough of the visceral pleasure of the original series without being tired of it. Furthermore, even if this pilot does not show Patrick Dempsey and Sarah Michelle Gellar enough to fully understand their characters, we can't wait to see what they will bring to the whole.«

Liz Shannon Miller — Consequence

« While we're not convinced that Dexter: Original Sin will be as captivating as the original series was in its early years, we hope that the new cast will establish their own chemistry rather than imitating the dynamics of the old one.«

Joel Keller — Decider

Cap or not cap?

« Dexter: Original Sin gets off to a difficult start and reminds us that a prequel on Dexter Morgan was not really necessary, as proven by the fact that this first episode was already described and explained in the original series. It also seems complicated for new actors to free themselves from their “Dexter babies” side.

Eric Goldman — IGN

« One of the interesting aspects of Original Sin is that we already know a lot about Dexter Morgan from the original series, including how his father Harry developed his ability to control his “Dark Passenger” , and how his mother's murder gave birth to his personal demons. So seeing all this unfold before our eyes feels a bit like watching an amateur theater troupe perform their version of a play that we already know by heart. And it doesn't help that several of the main actors seem poorly cast or, at best, poorly directed.«

Brian Tallerico — The A. V. Club

These scenes that Dexter fans know by heart before seeing them

“Gibson lacks the charisma that Hall gave to the original Dexter, and without that quality, it's sometimes difficult to be on the side of a guy who doesn't feel anything outside of his obsession with blood. The return of a new, young Dexter to our screens shouldn't be so tasteless. »

David Opie — Radio Times

« Original Sin doesn't take any new advantage from an original work so old it's old enough to vote. Still, it's a good representation of the trend toward money-driven retrospection that's devouring culture from the inside out like an infestation of termites. All that's left is an empty structure, ready to be swept away by the next hurricane that hits Miami.«

Alison Herman — Variety

So, who believes it?

With an average of 50/100 on Metacriticthe big return of the small screen's favorite psychopath seems to have been missed. Most critics point out unconvincing castingand above all, the unnecessary repetition of things already told many times in the original serieseven though it was only voiceovers and flashbacks.

Perhaps we should definitely let Dexter Morgan rest in peace. Nevertheless, these reviews are only based on the first episode of the seriesso we can hope that things will improve with time. And we will be delighted to form our own opinion as soon as Dexter : Original Sin will arrive on French screens, on a date still unknown to this day.
