The release of the first two episodes of Beast Games sparked a wave of negative comments regarding the program imagined by MrBeast and broadcast on Amazon Prime Video.
“Seeing everyone’s reactions to the Beast Games is great,” wrote YouTuber MrBeast on X, ex-Twitter, this Friday, December 20. Indeed, after the release of the first two episodes of Beast Games, the new reality show from the American videographer broadcast on Amazon Prime Video, the first opinions from Internet users were not long in coming.
But reactions are mixed. The YouTuber’s fans are full of praise for X. “You really innovated and created something new. Congratulations,” wrote one user. “It’s so good. When I think about all the logistics behind it, I’m blown away,” adds another.
“Watching poor people suffer”
But on social networks, the rest of Internet users seem more critical. “This new MrBeast show is some kind of dystopian Hunger Games bullshit,” criticizes one user. The way they toy with candidates for $5 million is like psychological torture.”
Indeed, in this show, 1,000 candidates compete in a series of events to try to win 5 million dollars, the largest sum ever put into play in the history of entertainment.
On the program: candidates who shoot quad bikes at arm's length, participants locked in a completely white room evoking an asylum, a manhunt against members of the American navy and above all, a lot of betrayal between the candidates.
A concept that does not please certain Internet users, therefore, who see in these games a way of creating entertainment by using people's misery. “Is it me or Beast Games is a totally sick and twisted show?”, asks a user. “Half of the challenges are social and psychological experiences. ‘Entertainment’ is just watching poor people suffer.”
Repeated controversies
“I really need people to understand that MrBeast is some random geek from North Carolina who became a modern day version of a Roman emperor who runs games like Saw”, adds another.
“The Beast Games are a bit like the predecessor of the Hunger Games… maybe I'm just cynical,” asks one user.
“People signing up for games out of financial necessity doesn't mean you're not exploiting their desperation for money and profit. That's literally the whole message of Squid Gameswhich MrBeast clearly did not understand,” laments a last one, in reference to the famous South Korean series.
Before the show even came out, the Beast Games had already caused controversy. Indeed, last August, several candidates and members of the team denounced a lack of hygiene and food during filming. Some participants were even injured.
Since then, five former candidates have decided to file a complaint on behalf of all participants on September 16 for “chronic mistreatment and sexual harassment”. They claim they were “shamelessly exploited”, not paid and subjected to unsafe conditions.
