After divorce from Canal+, Disney signs a distribution agreement with

In a few days, the agreement between Disney and Canal+ will end. Since 2020, the French company had the exclusivity of the first broadcast window for the team’s films, included the platform within its cinema/series offering and offered the group’s channels such as Disney Channel. The Vivendi subsidiary, in an effort to remain competitive, has decided not to renew this agreement. From January 1st, the American platform will leave the Canal+ catalog and the group’s channels will cease to be broadcast. In the latter case, Canal+’s decision seemed to have signed the death warrant for the emblematic channel. This Friday, December 20, as one might have expected, the American giant announced that it had signed an agreement with another player in the French audiovisual landscape. If the cable channel no longer wants this agreement, Disney will turn to internet service providers to maintain its place in French households. Hélène Etzi, President of The Walt Disney Company rejoices:

“We are very happy to partner with , to make our iconic content and stories accessible to as many French households as possible. Thanks to these strategic agreements, subscribers will be able to benefit of our content through 3 access modes simple and complementary: Disney+, our flagship channels Disney Channel and National Geographic and the VOD service.”

Laetitia Orsini Sharps, Consumer Director of Orange, sees this as an opportunity to continue “to offer our customers the best entertainment, by offering them quality channels and facilitating their access to essential services like Disney+”. The benefits are numerous for both entities. On the one hand, Orange can invest more widely in offering services to its customers. On the other hand, the American firm should limit the mechanical decline in its number of users in France. Canal+ claims more than 10 million customers in France, spread across all its offers and therefore those including Disney+. These are all customers who will lose their access to the service exclusively hosting the Star Wars, Marvel and Pixar licenses. So many customers will need to be convinced that a subscription is worth it.

What awaits Orange subscribers

A preferential rate for Disney+

The agreement between Orange and Disney+ is not as advantageous as the one with Canal+ was, at least for fans of series and living room entertainment. While Maxime Saada’s company offered a bundle with other emblematic services, certain Orange customers will only be able to benefit from a reduction on the bill. For the holders of a Livebox Max planand for these customers only, the operator promises a reduction of 5 euros per month and for life. This is already what was proposed for Netflix and Max. Note that this even concerns subscriptions with advertising and that the reduction is cumulative. Concretely, users can subscribe to offers supported by advertising from the three entities for 99 cents each. The bill therefore amounts to 2.97 euros per monthin addition to the price of the Livebox Max subscription. All other customers will be able to benefit from a free month to find out what the platform has in store.

Disney films four months after their release

By renouncing its partnership with Disney+, Canal loses the primacy of Walt Disney Company films broadcast in cinemas. Until now, they were all sure to invest in the firm’s catalog four months after their theatrical release. It is now on Orange that fans of superheroes or animation will have to go. Nevertheless, it will only be a VOD offer, namely available for purchase or rental. To benefit from access to a streaming platform, you will have to wait 17 months. Disney+, like its competitors, is still taking advantage of this broadcast window in France. Note that the company could review its investment in the creation of French content to take advantage of more advantageous deadlines.

Disney’s iconic channels

The last part of this partnership concerns linear broadcasting, and particularly the networks which will disappear from Canal+ on January 1. The next day, you will have to go to Orange to access Disney Channel and National Geographic. They will appear on this date on all decoders of ISP customers as well as on smartphone applications and a wide selection of connected TVs.
