will the anime have a sequel?

DanDaDan marked fall 2024 as one of the unmissable events in the world of Japanese animation. Launched on October 3, the anime ends this Thursday, December 19 with the broadcast of its twelfth and final episode, concluding a first season acclaimed by spectators and critics.

Supported by the Science Saru studio (Devilman Crybaby), the series has established itself as one of the best anime of its generation. A success due, in particular, to its careful aesthetics, its inventive narration and a clever mix of comedy, fantasy and science fiction. Unsurprisingly, as soon as this last episode is broadcast at 5 p.m., one question will burn on fans’ lips: when will season 2 be released?

An unforgettable friendship

The story of DanDaDanadapted from the successful manga by Yukinobu Tatsu, focuses on the atypical friendship between Momo Ayase and Ken Takakura, nicknamed Okarun. One believes in extraterrestrials, the other in spirits, and their improbable encounter leads them into a series of hilarious and spectacular adventures, mixing yokai and little green men.

These first 11 episodes won over viewers with their humor, their spectacular action scenes and moving moments of sensitivity. Faced with such enthusiasm, the future of DanDaDan is on everyone’s mind: is a season 2 in sight?

Season 2 clues

The information fell on December 19: the anime will indeed have a sequel, and this announcement is not surprising. First, there is no shortage of source material. The manga, being published since 2021, currently has 18 volumes in Japan, including 15 available in – the 16th coming in February 2025. Season 1 essentially covers the first four arcs of the manga: the introduction with Mémé-Turbo , the Silky Acros, the Serpos and part of the Haunted House arc.

The latter, which extends over more than 23 chapters (from 28 to 50), begins at the very end of this first season with the introduction of the character of Jiji. The latter seeks help from Momo and his grandmother to solve the mystery surrounding his parents’ illness and his new house, visibly haunted by a spirit.

Many arcs still unexploited

However, it is obvious that a single episode will not be enough to conclude this arc, as it is so dense. Season 2 will therefore logically continue this plot by adapting the sequel to the latter, which concludes in chapter 50, corresponding to the seventh volume of the manga. With such a narrative structure and many arcs still unexplored, the foundations for a sequel seemed already laid.

The success of the anime also worked in its favor. Viewing figures, combined with positive feedback on social media, confirm that DanDaDan was able to attract a large audience. The marketing strategy around DVD and Blu-ray pre-sales, announced with a division into four discs for this first season, also suggested that the production is banking on the durability of the series. The usual delays between two anime seasons give hope for a return by the end of 2025, at the earliest. Fans will therefore have to be patient.
