The signing of the Mercosur agreement worries French breeders and farmers. Indeed, if the French government opposes this agreement, the European Union says it is ready to sign it.
Since then, demonstrations and discontent have swelled in the streets of France.
To understand what is at stake in such an agreement, Apolline de Malherbe invited Dominique Schelcher, the CEO of Coopérative U, to the BFMTV set this Tuesday, November 26, 2024.
“If we are on the shelves and find ourselves having a choice, is French meat automatically more expensive, resulting in a more expensive product than Brazilian meat?” then asks the journalist.
Apolline de Malherbe does not hesitate to be ironic about her guest's answers
To which the CEO responds frankly: “Not necessarily.” A response which immediately made the journalist react: “But then what’s the point of getting meat from Brazil?”asks Apolline de Malherbe. Faced with this question given straight away, Dominique Schelcher has a hard time answering.
Trying to find his words, he says: “the first interest already is that French meat is quality meat, with high standards, with producers who do a fantastic job. Our Charolais…”he begins to list, before being cut off by the journalist, very amused by these statements: “It’s 8:39 a.m., excellent wake-up call to all, a good morning Charolaise”she said towards the viewers.
Questions that destabilize
But then does he say he is in favor of signing the Mercosur agreement? “As it stands, it should not be signed. The farmers are against, 600 parliamentarians are against, the government is against so it should not be signed as is.” he emphasizes. For him the main thing is to bring
“guarantees for farmers, to ensure their sustainability”.
As CEO of a large food group, he too would not want this agreement to be signed.
As usual, Apolline de Malherbe did not hesitate to push her guest to his limits in order to provide the most frank and straightforward answers to viewers.
