Despite the success of The BoysAmazon series creator Eric Kripke is terrified of what his series could become.
After the success of the first two seasons, The Boys continued to make its mark on Prime Video with a first spin-off, an animated anthology called The Boys present: Les Diaboliquesquickly followed by another derivative series, Gen Vthis time in live action. From now on, the series created by Eric Kripke in 2019 has four seasons, soon five, while Vought Risinganother spin-off and prequel about Soldier Boy, Stormfront and the company's beginnings, was announced last July. And who knows what else Amazon is planning to exploit the super-asshole universe of Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson.
Almost, The Boys therefore almost becomes another superheroic extended universe, or at least a brand which should be capitalized on. And that’s what concerns the showrunner of the Amazon series.
SAVE WHO CAN
And The Boys is above all a satire of American society, highlighting its paradoxes, its moral panics and the starification of its political figures, one of the additional targets of the work is the film industry, particularly the flashy imagery of Marvel and DC superheroes.
Between the parodies of D23, Phase 4 of the MCU, Kevin Feige and Comic-Con, the series took pleasure in mocking the business model and the commercial imperatives behind each production. Except that the difference between the Disney model and that of Kripke is blurring a little more with each spin-off and renewal, which worries the creator, as he explained on the microphone of Collider.
“We will study all the possibilities available to us. I live in absolute terror of becoming what has been satirized for five years. The Boys are punk rock and it hurts a lot when punk rockers sell out. I try not to. We do all these series because they are really close to our hearts, they fascinate us and allow us to tell new stories, those that we couldn't tell in The Boys.
We must not be satisfied with rapid development, but remain cautious and attentive to the choices we make while being able to defend the reasons why we do so. I worry about this every day. I just want people to say that maybe it's for them, or maybe not, but to recognize that we maintain a constant level of quality.«
So far, one could argue that The Boys donne already feels like you're going in circles and pull more than necessary on the rope. To see if season 5 will actually be the season too many, or if the story will skilfully get back on its feet after the small collapse of season 4. This last batch (main) does not yet have a release date but should not return to Prime Video before 2026.
