Audiences October 2024: CNews offers BFMTV for the fourth month of the year and confirms its new leadership position, LCI in very sharp decline

CNews confirms its leadership status. According to data published by Médiamétrie this Monday, November 4, 2024, the Canal+ group channel will be awarded the title of most watched news channel in October 2024 – and for the second consecutive month. Credited with an average audience share of 3,1% across the entire public, CNews is the only one among its competitors to make progress over one year on all targets (+0.4 points for those aged four and over; +0.3 points for those aged 25-49 and +0 .1 point on CSP+).

CNews dominates during the week, BFMTV at the weekend

Since the start of the school year, the outlook has been as follows: CNews is widening the gap thanks to the performance of its back of the grid lined up during the week (“Face à l'info” with Christine Kelly, “L'heure des pros” with Pascal Praud). This month, its peak was reached on Tuesday October 1 with an average audience share of 4.3%. A few days later, on Monday October 7, channel 16 won hands down with 1.2 points ahead of BFMTV (3.8% for CNews compared to 2.6% for its competitor). During the week, leadership escaped it only once on Thursday October 10 (4.2% for BFMTV, its highest level this month, compared to 4.0% for CNews), a day marked by the passage of the storm Kirk in and the funeral of actor Michel Blanc who died a week earlier at the age of 72.

Challenger with an audience share of 2,9% across the entire public, BFMTV fails to reach the symbolic bar of 3 audience share points. TNT channel 15 recorded a drop of 0.2 points for those aged 4 and over and half a point for those aged 25-49, a target in which it largely dominates its competitors (3.0% for BFMTV on this target compared to 1.8% for CNews). Dominated during the week, BFMTV regains leadership at CNews at the weekend. This Sunday, November 3, for example, the difference between the two antennas was one point, to the advantage of BFMTV (3.0% for channel 15 against 2.0% for CNews).

If CNews, already more powerful than BFMTV during the last two months of last season (May and June 2024), seems to be at the top of the audience chart, its rival from the CMA CGM group is not giving up the game. “Regaining first place remains more than ever our objective with Nicolas de Tavernost and Jean-Philippe Baille (respectively general director and information director of the RMC BFM group)”, declared Fabien Namias, new general director of the channel in “Le Parisien” this Saturday, November 2. “BFMTV aims to be the reference news channel. We must first stabilize our audience by capitalizing on our fundamentals, before setting out again to conquer. This won't happen in the blink of an eye. It's a matter of months rather than weeks“, he agreed. “We then need fewer speakers on stage, with real expertise and who listen to each other. Putting six people around the table whose legitimacy is not proven and who constantly insult each other is over.“.

LCI collapses over a year, Franceinfo slips below the audience share point

Behind the leading duo, LCI recorded a sharp decline in October 2024. Viewed by an average of 1,6% of the public this month, the TF1 group's news channel lost, despite a good start to the month (up to 2.4% PDA on Tuesday October 1), half a point of audience share over one year on 4 years and over and CSP+. The drop is more measured among 25-49 year olds, a smaller target in the channel's audience (-0.1 point). LCI has not reached 2 points of average audience share over a day since… Wednesday October 9.

Finally, in the general ranking, Franceinfo (0,9% of the public) brings up the rear for all channels combined. The France Télévisions group's news channel, which attracted up to 1.3% of the public on Wednesday October 9, is on par with its performance for the same month last year but lost 0.1 point over one month.
