In Shanghai, Léon Marchand sets a French record and a European record on the same day

Léon Marchand set a new European record this Saturday to win the 200m medley at the Short Course World Cup taking place in Shanghai.

The French swimmer won in 1:50.30.

At the same time, he improved the 12-year-old French record that he had already beaten in the morning during the series.

He is competing in his first races since the Olympic Games which saw him win four gold medals. Léon Marchand is currently in Shanghai (China) for the Short Course World Cup, and he doesn’t stop breaking records. This Saturday, he won the 200m short course medley in 1:50:30, erasing the European record held since 2019 by the Greek Andréas Vazaíos (1:50:85). With this time, the Frenchman at the same time improves the 12-year-old French record which he had already beaten in series in the morning. He then swam in 1:53.53 and erased the time of Jérémy Stravius ​​(1:54.00) which had stood since 2012.

In the final, Léon Marchand finished ahead of the British Duncan Scott (1:51.08) whom he had already beaten in the Olympic final over this distance at the Paris Games this summer. Swiss Noé Ponti took third place 1:51.78

Already the day before, the native had won the 100m medley event and broken the French record for this distance, in 50.65 seconds, three tenths below Florent Manaudou’s time which dated from 2013.

Where to see the swimmer in the coming months?

After this stage of the Short Course World Cup in Shanghai, Léon Marchand will head to Incheon (South Korea, October 24-26) and Singapore (October 31-November 3). His season will then continue in Budapest, for the World Championships in the 25m pool from December 10 to 15, before undoubtedly a stopover in (Indian Ocean meeting, December 20-22).

This period is described as “transition” for the Toulouse swimmer, who now benefits from professional status after two seasons playing in the American university championship.
