Quebecor will broadcast a Canadian match on TVA next month

Sometimes sporting events are broadcast on a general channel. But when it comes time to talk about the Canadian, it’s always on RDS or TVA Sports that it happens in terms of television.

But next month, that will change.

According to what colleague Maxime Truman learned by talking left and right, the Canadiens’ Saturday, November 9 match (against Toronto) will be presented on TVA. He tweeted a huge hint to that effect. #Branch

The match will therefore be available on TVA Sports, but also on TVA. There will be two possibilities to watch the match.

We can think that the people who listen to the match on TVA Sports will not change their habits and that the television ratings will be similar. But to that, we will add the people who will listen to it on TVA.

Normally, on a Saturday evening, there are an average of 530,000 people who listen to the Canadian on TVA Sports. We can predict that between 200,000 and 300,000 people will connect to TVA.

The match should therefore be listened to more. Those who do not have TVA Sports or RDS will therefore have the chance to see a rare match on cable.

Note that the idea of broadcasting a match on TVA is not, according to what we have been able to learn, new. It has been several years since thinking began in this direction.

One wonders if the experiment could be repeated after Christmas if it is a success. And because the match will be against a division rival, it may still be popular.

Normally, on Saturday evening on TVA, there is a film broadcast. It doesn’t attract big ratings.

That said, it also comes with risk. TVA Sports has 22 Canadian hockey games and RDS has 60. If RDS decided to broadcast a game in Noovo, it would be less than 2% of the CH season on RDS which would be available to everyone.

But a game on TVA is equivalent to almost 5% of the TVA Sports season for the Canadian. If Quebecor did it a little more often, it would make those who subscribe to TVA Sports for CH matches wonder if it is worth continuing to pay for TVA Sports.

The number of matches is a factor to keep in mind. But for a match, it’s simply a great initiative for hockey fans.

Prolongation

Let us remember that at the moment, we are also experiencing a certain media revolution. We saw it this week when Gary Bettman did nothing to hide: digital broadcasting is part of the future of hockey.

The presence of Prime in Montreal on Monday is a big example of this.

The match on November 9 will undoubtedly be watched more than the others. Given that the way hockey is consumed is changing, is TVA Sports trying to please the NHL in terms of television ratings?

Remember that the contract with the NHL will end in 2026. And until then, everything is on the table.
