The Big Bang Theory once revealed that behind Sheldon’s multiple blows was a truly tragic story – which the spin-off Young Sheldon then put into perspective, without the fan favorite himself ever knowing.

“Knock, knock, knock… Penny ; knock, knock, knock… Penny ; knock, knock, knock… Penny“: the fact that Sheldon, played by Jim Parsons, the fan favorite of The Big Bang Theoryclearly announces himself before entering other houses, apartments or rooms by knocking several times and giving the name of the person he would like to speak to, is one of the most popular running gags since the early days of cult sitcom. In reality, it is not an obsessive-compulsive disorder, but a safety measure to protect yourself.
Sheldon once revealed this in the tenth season of The Big Bang Theoryin which he explained to Penny (Kaley Cuoco) that when he was 13, he caught his father George in bed with another woman. Since then, Sheldon always knocks and calls three times at a door to be sure to be noticed and thus never again see something that is not intended for his eyes.

The problem is that years later, the spin-off Young Sheldon made this explanation a bit absurd, especially to prevent a character as popular with fans as George from suddenly becoming an adulterer. In this prequel, when the moment of the alleged infidelity arrives, the audience discovers that George’s bedfellow was not another woman, but Sheldon’s mother, Mary, who, as part of a game of role, simply wore a blonde wig and was therefore not recognizable from behind.
Sheldon still doesn’t know the truth, even years later
Sheldon never knew this truth. This is what his retrospective account already suggested in Young Sheldona few years after the end of The Big Bang Theoryand which was recently confirmed by Steve Holland, the co-creator of the two series: “He didn’t know it was Mary. He still thinks he caught his father cheating on her“said Steve Holland during an interview with the TVLine site.

“He thought he saw his father with another woman, but that’s not what he saw. And there’s a certain sadness in the fact that he’s carried this with him all these years“, he added.
Fans were hopeful that Sheldon would finally get the clarity that would free him from his long-standing trauma in the finale of Young Sheldonbroadcast a few months ago on American television, but that did not happen.

It seems unlikely that this will ever happen. Certainly, the Big Bang Theory universe will continue to exist after the end of the main series and Young Sheldonbut Jim Parsons emphasized, it was not so long ago that a new return to the franchise was not an option for him.
