Available exclusively on Disney+the historical drama immerses us in the life of John Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis), the English commander of a mysterious ship abandoned on the Japanese coast. He carries secrets that could tip the scales in favor of Lord Yoshii Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada), engaged in a fight to the death against his enemies from the Council of Regents. They would at the same time reduce the influence of Blackthorne’s enemies, the Jesuit priests and Portuguese traders. The two men will realize that their destinies are inextricably linked to Lady Mariko (Anna Sawai), a Catholic who followed the teachings of the Portuguese Jesuits.

Shogun : a series renewed for two seasons at once

And Shogun was initially conceived as a mini-series, its enormous success led FX, Hulu and the heirs of James Clavell to prepare two new seasons. The series will therefore end at the end of its third chapter, as creators Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo explained. “We know where it starts, where it ends, and who will be part of the journey. But right now, we’re focusing on part two to make sure we get to the point we want to get to. Part two is, like often are the second, darker chapters”. If no information concerning the filming and release date of season 2 has yet been communicated, Hiroyuki Sanada revealed to the media Variety that half of the existing cast would be back and that “the other half would be made up of new characters”.

Shogun made Emmy history

Disney won the 76th edition of the Emmy Awards thanks to Shogunbroadcast on FX in the United States and on Disney+ internationally. The series, adapted from the novel by James Clavell, collected no less than eighteen trophies in one evening, including best direction and best dramatic series. It thus becomes the first non-English-speaking series to win the famous sesame. “You have validated a very expensive subtitled Japanese period series, the climax of which takes place around a poetry competition”rejoiced the creator of the series, Justin Marks. Hiroyuki Sanada and Anna Sawai won the Emmy for best actor and best actress in a drama series.
