Did Charles Ingalls actually adopt Albert in real life?

While the series Little House on the Prairie was inspired by the life of novelist Laura Ingalls, some of the plots were completely invented for the needs of the television show. But what about the adoption of Albert Quinn? Did he really join Charles Ingalls’ family in real life? Serieously tells you everything.

Happy parents of many children, Charles and Caroline Ingalls have continued to expand their family throughout the series. Little House on the Prairie. So, in addition to their biological children, Mary, Laura, Carrie, Charles Jr and Grace, the pioneer couple also decided toadopt Cassandra and James Cooper, as well as Albert Quinn.

Living in poverty, the latter was forced to steal to survive and very quickly won the hearts of the Ingalls, who wanted to offer him a better life. From then on, the character played by Matthew Labyorteaux became the son that Charles had always dreamed of and was able to flourish and develop certain talents, particularly in medicine. An interesting journey and ultimately very different from the life that was originally intended for him. But is his plot based on a true story?

Like many plots of Little House on the Prairiethe character ofAlbert Quinn Ingalls was born from the imagination of Michael Landon and not from Laura Ingalls’ memoirs. The young man was therefore never part of the Ingalls’ lives, but was invented in memory of someone the director and screenwriter knew well.

« My parents had a couple of friends, who were their best friends and who had a child named Albert ” explained Leslie Landon, the daughter of the creator of the series, at the microphone of Serieously at the Monte Carlo Television Festival. He was killed during his senior year of high school. It was devastating for their family, but also for my father who loved him deeply. And I think when he saw Matthew Labyorteaux play Charles Ingalls as a young man, he was fascinated and saw in him an incredible talent. So, I think thatHe wanted to create his character in honor of the son of his best friends ».

Far from being a simple modification of the story of the adventures of the Ingalls family, Albert’s introduction is therefore a true tribute to his loved ones. A message of love and respect towards a departed friend.
