Many low-altitude ski resorts are currently battling a light covering of snow.Image: keystone
A short weekend in the Swiss mountains to put on skis? You will have to climb very high to enjoy the snow.
At altitude, the conditions seem perfect: freezing temperatures allow for good artificial snowmaking, and the sun often shines. But the situation is not so idyllic everywhere. In resorts located at low altitude, snow is rare. A recent map from the Institute for the Study of Snow and Avalanches (SLF) clearly illustrates the problem.

A card that says a lot
The map compares the current snow depth in the Alps to the average of the last 30 years. Blue areas indicate that there is more snow than average for that period between 1991 and 2020. Red areas indicate that there is less snow than average, while dark red areas show places that are usually snowy where there is currently no snow.
Unfortunately, the majority of areas are red or yellow, meaning there is overall less snow than usual.
Hopes of new falls
The resorts are hoping for snowfall to improve the situation, but the weather forecast for the next few days does not predict significant precipitation. For low altitude stations, the situation therefore remains critical. If you plan to ski, you can check online which slopes are open.

For political scientist René Knüsel, Viola Amherd “took risks” by advocating an increased rapprochement between Switzerland and NATO. And then, the Federal Councilor perhaps no longer had the energy necessary to lead the Department of Defense.
Viola Amherd throws in the towel. How do you explain this decision?
René Knüsel: The UDC demanded his resignation. This request surely factors into his decision to leave the Federal Council. Calls for resignation are part of the political game. That said, I do not see any objective reasons for Ms. Amherd to leave the Federal Council and the Department of Defense (DDPS), today more than yesterday. He is accused of malfunctions, the drones purchased from Israel and still not operational, among other things, but malfunctions, there have always been in the Swiss army. However, the Mirage affair in the 1960s forced the head of what was then called the Federal Military Department, Paul Chaudet, to resign.
